The Vikings Sailing Club is still in festive mode celebrating the international participation of two of its young stars, Enrico Emanuele Putzulu Caruana and Jean-Marc Sammut, at the prestigious Choco Cup 2025, held from 22–24 July in Balatonföldvár, Hungary. Both sailors form part of the Club’s Opti Racing Team led by performance coach Batuhan Cesur.
Hosted by the renowned Spartacus Sailing Club, the Choco Cup is Central Europe’s premier Optimist regatta, attracting over 150 young sailors from across the continent to compete in the scenic sweet-water conditions of Lake Balaton. This year marked the 16th edition of the event, known for its world-class race organization, vibrant sailing community, and picturesque setting.
Strong Performances on the Water
Our young Opti Racers started their first international adventure with two days of pre-Regatta training with coach Bence Szalontai. This served as a familiarisation opportunity to different conditions offered by their usual training grounds in Malta’s seas. Fast forward to the three Regatta days, both Enrico and Jean-Marc showcased determination and skill across eight challenging races. Following two days of intensive racing, Jean-Marc qualified in the Gold Fleet, while Enrico earned a place in the Silver Fleet missing the Gold Fleet by just five positions!
Both sailors excelled in their respective categories. Jean-Marc (MLT 215) finished 20th overall with a total of 118 points. He classified as 5th Junior (Cadet) in the Gold Fleet, 5th Junior Overall and 3rd Male Junior Overall. His standout performance came in Race 5, where he secured an impressive 7th place.
Enrico (MLT 242) raced in the Silver Fleet, earning a total of 187 points and placing 81st Overall, 51st Youth (Senior) Overall, 5th in the Silver Fleet and 4th Youth in the Silver Fleet. He delivered strong finishes in Race 6 and Race 7, placing 11th and 10th, respectively in his category.
In the lead-up to the Regatta, the Club held a send-off celebration earlier in July, rallying community support around the boys’ journey. The event, kindly supported by La Vallata Trattoria & Pizzeria and Captain Caruana, fostered camaraderie and highlighted the Club’s dedication to nurturing young talent.
Enrico and Jean-Marc’s experience at the Choco Cup 2025 stands as a proud moment for the Vikings Sailing Club and a first for the Club’s Opti Racing team.
Congratulations young Vikings!
