Club Manager & Lead Coach

Location: Vikings Sailing Club, Malta

 

Role Overview

Vikings Sailing Club is seeking a motivated and experienced Club Manager & Lead Coach to take responsibility for both the day-to-day management of the club and the leadership of our coaching programme.

This is a varied role combining operations management, coaching leadership, equipment and facilities upkeep, and member engagement. The successful candidate will oversee coaching pathways from beginners through cadets to the racing team, while ensuring the smooth running of the club’s activities, courses, and events.

The position requires a dynamic individual with strong coaching experience, practical sailing knowledge, hands-on technical skills, and excellent organisational and communication abilities.


 

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Administration

  • Manage the day-to-day running of the sailing club.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for members, parents, and visitors.
  • Maintain records of coaching rosters, courses, and events.
  • Support the Club Committee in implementing policies and decisions.

 

Coaching Leadership

  • Act as Lead Coach for the club’s sailing programme.
  • Oversee structured pathways for:
    • Beginners – introduce new sailors to Optimists, Toppers, and RS Touras.
    • Cadets – develop skills and confidence in Optimists, Toppers, and RS Fevas.
    • Racing Team – assist our Performance coaches during race training and progression in Optimist, ILCA, and RS Feva classes.
  • Mentor and support assistant coaches and volunteers.
  • Plan and deliver training sessions in line with World Sailing standards.
  • Ensure training is safe, fun, and age-appropriate while building long-term participation.
  • Coordinate participation in local and national regattas for racing squads.

 

Facilities & Equipment

  • Oversee the upkeep of club premises, storage areas, and workshop.
  • Manage maintenance of the club’s RIBs and safety boats.
  • Ensure regular inspection and repair of the dinghy fleet (Optimist, Topper, RS Feva, RS Toura, ILCA).
  • Maintain safety and readiness of all sailing equipment.

 

Events & Membership

  • Assist in organising club racing, regattas, and sailing events.
  • Promote participation across all levels of sailing.
  • Support new members and families in engaging with the club community.
 
 

 

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven coaching experience in dinghy sailing (RYA (or equivalent) Dinghy Instructor or higher).
  • Experience working with youth sailors across multiple levels (beginners to racing).
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Practical knowledge of dinghy and RIB maintenance.
  • Leadership skills to manage coaches and inspire young sailors.
  • Malta Nautical License or equivalent

 

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Sailing Instructor or Race Coach qualification.
  • Experience managing a sailing or sports club environment.
  • First Aid at Sea certificate.
  • Experience coordinating regatta teams.
