Optimist Atlantic Group

The Optimist Sailing Program at Viking Sailing Club

Our Aim The goal of our element-based grouping system is to provide a clear, structured progression path that feels like an epic maritime adventure rather than a rigid grading system. We aim to foster a lifelong love for sailing by building confidence, resilience, and teamwork. By disguising skill levels as progressive stages of mastering the natural elements. This ensures that every young sailor feels proud of their current fleet while staying highly motivated to unlock the skills required to conquer the next stage of their sailing journey. Groups will be including minimum of 4 and maximum of 10 sailors. Which will allow coaches and sailors to spend more intensive time during the training. There will be 4 groups in order: Arctic, Antartic, Atlantic, Pacific.

This program is specifically tailored for adventurous kids between the ages of 7 and 15 sailing in the Optimist class.

The Atlantic Group

The Vibe: Dynamic, focused, and progressive.

The Focus: This group is all about taking what they know and making it smoother, faster, and more deliberate. We maintain a playful approach to keep the energy high, but the time on the water is dedicated to actively improving their maneuvers and boat handling.

Key Learnings:

  • Skill Polish: Practicing tacks, gybes, and mark roundings until they become second nature.
  • Advanced Trim: Learning how to adjust the sail for different points of sail and changing wind conditions.
  • Independent Sailing: Fostering the confidence to handle the boat independently through continuous, structured water practice.

Description

Elevate the sailors skills with our joint weekday sessions designed specifically for the Atlantic and Pacific advanced groups. This program focuses on increasing “sea time,” providing sailors with the consistent practice needed to master technical maneuvers and racing tactics.

Sailors can choose to join us for one or both weekday sessions in addition to the regular Saturday program:

  • Tuesday Session: Led by Coach Batuhan
  • Thursday Session: Led by Coach Batuhan
  • Saturday afternoon Session: Led by Coach Masha/Batuhan (includes occasional joint sessions)

The Session Routine

  • Time: Official training begins at 4:00 PM.
  • Early Rigging: We encourage sailors to arrive early! This allows the team to rig all boats together, fostering a supportive environment and helping out those who may be arriving closer to the start time.

To ensure the success of these mid-week sessions, we greatly appreciate parent collaboration regarding transportation. Coordinating carpools or timely drop-offs helps our sailors maximize every minute of daylight on the water.
